Cruise Ship Destinations
There are many destinations that cruise ships travel to in the world. The times of the year that cruise ships operate varies with the weather conditions, so not all destinations are available year round. Cruises offer a varying, wide range of excursions for different destinations. To get an overview of what you might get from each cruise destination, read on!
|Alaska - All major cruise lines offer this destination and cruises operate from May to September during the summer months in the Northern Hemisphere. Most cruises depart from Vancouver, British Columia or Seattle, Washington for an Alaskan cruise. The main destination ports are Juneau, Ketchikan, and Anchorage. When docked at these locations, you can visit a salmon hatchery, go for a dog sled ride, go on a helicopter ride over a glacier, visit an Alaskan rainforest sanctuary, or many other outdoor activities. There are also high speed cruises that you can go on at ports such as Icy Strait Point for a few hours and see wildlife such as bears, orcas, and humpback whales. There are also prime opportunities for scenic cruising on your trip through Glacier National Park, Tracy Arm Fjord, College Fjord, and Hubbard Glacier.|
Asia - Only a few cruise lines offer trips to Japan, China, and Asia such as Princess, Celebrity, and Royal Caribbean, but they are offered year round. The major destination ports are Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, Tokyo, Beijing, and Pusan. In Beijing, you can visit the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, and Tianamen Square. Hong Kong has the Victoria Peak & Tram, Stanley Market bazaar, and Macau island nearby. Singapore has a beautiful botanical gargen, zoo, and bird park. You can visit Mount Fuji while in Tokyo and visit the Sankeien Gardens, Meiji Shrine, or Imperial Palace Park Plaza. Scenic cruise opportunities are at Shiretoko Peninsula and Japan Inland Sea.
Australia\New Zealand - Princess, Celebrity, and Royal Caribbean offer cruises from September to April during the year. May - August are winter months in the Southern Hemisphere. The big destination ports are Auckland, Sydney, Melbournse, and Brisbane. In Auckland, you can visit the harbor and bridge, or check out the museums, or see the Sky Tower or sail through the Glowworm Grotto. While docked at Sydney, you can visit the Opera House, Bondi beach, and the Blue Mountains. Be sure to check out the scenery and marine wildlife off of the Kimberley Coast and Willis Island while on the cruise.
Bahamas\Caribbean - All major cruise lines offer vacations to the Caribbean year round. Most depart from ports in Florida or San Juan, Puerto Rico. Some major ports of call are Grand Cayman, Cozumel, and Nassau. Visit the Cayman turtle farm, stingray city, and Seven Mile Beach while at Grand Cayman and get some snorkeling in at the beautiful beaches. When on Cozumel, visit the Mayan ruins, Chankanaab National Park's natural aquarium, or X-Caret - an ecological/archeological theme park. In Nassau, visit Fort Charlotte, Atlantis Resort, or go snorkeling to see coral, fishes, shipwrecks, and stingrays.
Canada\New England - Cruise lines offer trips to this destination from April through November. Major ports include Boston, Corner Brook, and Halifax. Visit the brownstones on Newbury Street in Boston, or see Harvard Square, or enjoy shopping and dining at Faneuil Hall & Quincy Marketplace. In Newfoundland, enjoy a scenic walking tour of Corner Brook, or a bus tour to the Captain Cook Monument, or check out Gros Morne National Park. In Nova Scotia, visit the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, see the lighthouse at Peggy's Cove, or visit 18th-century St. Paul's Cathedral.
Europe - Cruise operators offer trips year round to the nations of Europe. There are many ways to hit many major cities in a 10 day cruise package such as a Black Sea\Greek Isles tour, a Mediterranean cruise from Spain to Turkey, a Scandanavian & Russian cities tour, or a Holy Land cruise that takes you from Italy to Turkey and to Eqypt. Some of the more popular ports of call visited are Venice, Santorini, Barcelona, and London. When docked at Venice, Italy, take a gondola ride, vist St. Marks Basilica, or see glassmaking at the Murano glass show room. When visiting Santorini, Greece, you can take a cruise tour to the Santorini Volcano, or check out the black sand beach at Kamari, or walk through the cobblestone villages of Oia and Fira. Barcelona, Spain has the Picasso Museum, shopping at Las Ramblas, and visit Gaudi's cathedral La Sagrada Familia. While visiting London, England you will want to see Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace, trek out to Stonehenge, or take a cruise of the Thames river.
Hawaii - Most cruise lines only travel here from April to May and again from September to January. Norwegian Cruise Line is the only carrier who provides year round service to the Hawaiian islands. Major ports include Kona, Lahaina, and Honolulu. While docked at Kona on the Big Island, take a trip on a high speed boat over to Kealakelua Bay & Captain Cook Monument for some snorkeling, or hitch a ride on a helicopter for a bird's eye view of Volcano National Park, or visit a coffee plantation for a tour! While in Lahaina, Maui, take a stroll through the old whaling town, go on a whale watching boat tour, or book a helicopter\van tour to Hana, or visit the Haleakala Volcano. When you visit Honolulu, you can get a quick hike in at Diamond Head crater, visit the USS Arizona and the Pearl Harbor Memorial, or grab a bus tour through the North Shore of Oahu to the Polynesian Cultural Center for a tour and luau.
Pacific Coastal - Norwegian, Celebrity, and Princess cruises offer cruise trips along the Pacific Coast of North America. The popular ports of call include San Francisco, Catalina Island, and Los Angeles. On Catalina Island, you can visit the city of Avalon and go for a scenic tour of the island, or go on a snorkeling tour to Lover's Cove, or get on a glassbottom boat to view the fish, or visit the Avalon Casino and get a tour. In Los Angeles, Universal Studios and City Walk are worth visiting, or get a tour of Olvera Street, Farmers Market, and the Chinese Theater with all of its famous celebrity hand prints, or the famous Santa Monica pier with its arcade, eateries, ferris wheel, and rollercoaster are a must see. South America - Princess, Royal Caribbean, and Celebrity Cruises offer packages from December through April during the Southern Hemisphere's summer months. Some major ports of call are Buenos Aires, Rio De Janeiro, and Montevideo. When docked at Buenos Aires, Argentina, check out a walking tour of the La Boca district and the Recoleta Cemetery, visit the cattle ranches at Argentine Estancia, or catch a Tango show and lunch. When in Rio, Brazil visit the Christ the Redeemer status standing 125 feet tall above the city, or see Tijuca National Park - the world's largest urban park, or a tour of the regions of Copacabana, Ipanema & Leblon. In Montevidoe, Uruguay, see the gaucho lifestyle at Estancia ranch, or visit Punta Del Este - the most famous seaside resort, or go tour Colonia Del Sacramento.
